Children Who Raise Children

Shelly Meyer–Hand of Hope International Relations Officer

Today I met a lovely little eleven year old girl named Levi. Eleven year old girls should be playing jump rope and reading books about ponies and kittens, but Levi is the head of her household. She is raising herself and three younger children all on her own. She is both Mom and Dad to two little girls who are nine years old and her little brother who is four. She has to make sure they have food, clothing and a roof over their heads. Children like Levi are the reason that Hand of Hope has teamed up with the Centre for Total Transformation (CTT) in Harare, Zimbabwe, to feed and provide education and the love of Jesus for vulnerable kids like Levi. She and her family walk six miles everyday to the Hope Center to receive a good meal and basic education and the word of God. I will never forget the smile on her face as she counted to ten for me and said the alphabet. In that smile I saw hope in the face of a child who only a few months ago was struggling to survive from day to day with no hope or help, but now she has both thanks to you.

Feeding the Vulnerable in Zimbabwe

Shelly Meyer–Hand of Hope International Relations Officer

Today we had another great opportunity to hang out with vulnerable children in Zimbabwe. They were so happy to receive the plate of food and I enjoyed playing with them. The smiles of children, no matter rich or poor, are so addictive.

Helping Japan

David L. Meyer – CEO Hand of Hope

Hand of Hope is actively partnering with Convoy of Hope, YWAM and Crash Japan to assist those affected by the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and following tsunami that have wreaked havoc on the nation of Japan. The massive wall of water that swept through a long stretch of Japan’s north-east coast has wiped out several towns and villages. The death toll is already in the thousands and continues to rise. To make an already grim situation worse, a nuclear power plant hit by the tsunami is facing a possible meltdown which will only make the needs for this nation even greater.

Please join us in prayer for the people of Japan, for the needs, for those who have lost loved ones and homes and for those who have been injured or have been impacted by this disaster in any way.

Restored in Malawi

Shelly Meyer–Hand of Hope International Relations Officer

Cathy Zagwa is 11 years old and was born with a club foot. Due to her clubfoot condition, Cathy experienced great pain, embarrassment, and was often unable to attend school. “It is even unthinkable to suggest that the disabled child is a witch…and she is disabled because she is paying for her sins; but that’s what the people say” explained Cathy’s mother. The community perceives a disabled child as a sinner and a cursed person.

At the government district hospital Cathy received club foot treatment for a year. However, nothing changed. Instead, her foot got worse and she finally gave up. But God did not give up on Cathy. One day, she was identified and diagnosed of neglected club foot and was booked for an operation at the Joyce Meyer Ministry, Hand of Hope supported CURE Hospital in Blantyre.

After surgery, Cathy will walk properly like any other child and go to school. She will be able to wear shoes something she has missed since she was born. You can imagine the joy she will have at last! Cathy and her mother both found grace before God as they confessed Christ as their Lord and savior.

Medical Missions Update: Returning to Cambodia

Dr. Steve Lovell – Medical Missions Volunteer

While at the Hand of Hope Health Center in Pursat, Cambodia as part of the medical missions outreach this week, a beautiful twelve year old Cambodian girl came in for treatment. She came in for an embarrassing growth that was coming out of her nose. She constantly walked around tilting her head downward so people would not notice it as much.

We were able to perform a minor surgical procedure and remove the growth from her right nostril. Before the little girl left she was holding her head up high and smiling for all of us to see. She turned out to be very pleased with her new look. Without the Hand of Hope medical/dental team the care that is given to people like this beautiful girl would not be possible. Thank you Lord for allowing me to be a part of your helping Hand of Hope.
