New Well of Life in Kalagachia, India

By Gary Preston

An hour’s drive east of central Kolkata we arrived at the village of Kalagachia. This small village was the site for the dedication of a brand new fresh water well and church building. The water will supply the needs of at least 300 villagers and the new church building is the only one within 15 kilometers. There is no way you could find this village except with someone who knew the way. There are hundreds of narrow roads that all look the same, with people, animals and vehicles of every kind filling the streets. The combination of honking horns and all the unique smells made the journey truly special.

Young men playing drums and the smiling faces of many children, villagers and the local officials greeted us upon arrival. The new water well is located right next to the new church, which we feel was so appropriate. The well to bring and sustain the physical lives of these precious people and the church to bring and sustain their spiritual lives through Christ Jesus. What an honor and privilege this day has been for my two traveling companions, David Wessler who is our German office director, Adel and me. It was an honor to be able dedicate this well and pray for God’s favor and blessing upon this village on behalf of the Healing Place Church of Baton Rouge, Louisiana who partnered with Hand of Hope in this project.

As we walked back to the minibus more and more villagers continued to stream in to celebrate this special day dressed in their best clothes. Bad water is by far and away the number one cause of disease in India. What a blessing to know, this threat has been greatly reduced for these people. Thank you partners for helping make this all possible.

Caring for the People of India

Ashley Wilkins - Hand of Hope Medical Missions Coordinator

Our medical/dental outreach to Kolkata India has so far been a great success. We have seen the Lord move in mighty ways during the long, hot days serving the people. An outreach of this nature has not taken place in Kolkata in a very long time and the patients have been so grateful for the work the team is doing. All of the treatment and medication we give are completely free for the patients, which has been a wonderful blessing to this area as most may live near a hospital but do not have the financial means to pay for the needed treatment.

I want to send a huge thank you from the field to all of our partners who help to make outreaches like this one possible. Without your assistance thousands of people would have gone without medical/dental care this week but more importantly may not have heard the gospel message we have shared. The medicine has been the doorway into the hearts of the people. Thank you!

Baby's Life Changed Forever

David L. Meyer – CEO Hand of Hope

Shelly is holding a 2 day old baby born at Prem Kiran. They named her “Joy” which is Shelly’s first name. This little girl would have had a very different life if it were not for the love and support of all of you. See, her mother was rescued from the brothels of Mumbai where she was in the sex trafficking business. Now her and her baby will have a great life. Another win for Jesus!!

Transforming Lives in India

David L. Meyer – CEO Hand of Hope

She was only ten years old when a stranger started up a conversation and offered her a soft drink. Three days later Kajol woke up in a brothel. She had been drugged – a victim of the sex trade industry.

Eventually, somehow she made her way to one of our feeding centers and today, at 14, she’s the youngest girl at the Prem Karen Transformation Center here in India. Here she’ll learn how to survive outside of prostitution, study a trade, and experience God’s love for her.

I’m in awe of what God is allowing us to do through our partner’s support. And many women, just like Kajol, couldn’t be more grateful.

Helping the People of India

Festival of Life - Bangalore, India - January 2009

David L. Meyer – CEO Hand of Hope

Over the next week our teams will be arriving in India, bringing much needed help to the people of the region. Our medical missions team will be in Kolkata providing medical and dental care. Another team will be going to our hospital and AIDS work in Chandrakal. We will also visit Prem Kiran, our highly effective transformation center for women who have been rescued from human trafficking. The trip will culminate with a four-day Festival of Life in Kolkata with teachings from Joyce, Tommy Barnett and worship with Darlene Zschech and the Hillsong band. Please join us in prayer for these events as we are looking forward to what God has in store for the people of India!

Being a beacon for Christ in Garissa, Kenya

Brad Senekal – Outreach Coordinator
JMM South Africa Office

In the Eastern part of Kenya, close to the Somalian border, lies Garissa, a staunchly Islamic community referred to as a “mini-Somalia”. Many Somalians have sought refuge across the border from the war in their country. The remote location of this community is one of the factors why poverty and illness (including HIV and TB) have had such devastating effects. As a result children have become orphans, with little access to care, food or a family.

Through partnership with New Life Homes, Joyce Meyer Ministries has been able to care for the orphaned and vulnerable children as well as those affected by HIV in this Muslim community. Not only do the children receive a daily meal and basic education, but they see and experience the love of Christ. Currently we are drilling a well for access to clean water, and building a HOPE CENTRE which will serve as a school, feeding point, and spiritual beacon for Christ. Thank you to our faithful partners who continue to make it possible for us to reach these communities!
