A visit to London right now is quite challenging with the upcoming Olympic games causing insane amounts of traffic and long airport delays but most any inconvenience would be worth the opportunity to see the impact that Project Green Light is making there. A relatively new outreach, this cooperative effort between Hand of Hope and Hillsong London is providing medical care to London's homeless.

It was wonderful to see firsthand the doors that God is opening to share His love with these people who often feel worthless and invisible. Something as simple as a blood pressure check can not only save a life but potentially turn that life around. We met many grateful people and loved seeing the smiling faces.

So when you watch the Olympics soon, remember the other exciting things that you help make happen in that city. Thank you for helping us help them.

Meet Olivia. Just last year, her 3 1/2 year old sister Anja died from a water-borne illness. Many families in this Madagascan village have lost children this way. But that is one concern they no longer face. Hand of Hope has provided a freshwater well here and in many other villages in Madagascar. Thank you for helping us save the lives of many children like Olivia.

Syrian Refugees Receive Food and Hope

The people of Syria continue to endure incredible hardship due to on-going internal political unrest. Public demonstrations and protests have resulted in violent conflicts – thousands of people have been killed as a result of the fighting. To escape the brutal violence, thousands of Syrians have left their homes and everything they own to flee to neighboring states in Lebanon where our partners Heart for Lebanon have been providing help.

Heart for Lebanon exists to see lives changed and communities transformed through compassionate ministries. Their mission is to facilitate proper education, provide humanitarian aid, strengthen community development and promote leadership empowerment. Hand of Hope has been providing support to Heart for Lebanon since 2006. Through this on-going support, Heart for Lebanon has been able to reach 500 families a month with food, cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items and the gospel message. Recently, Hand of Hope also provided support for 3 additional months of food which was distributed to Syrian refuges that have fled to the Northern part of Lebanon. This food has been a tremendous blessing to the Syrian refugees who have experienced tremendous adversity and suffering.

Disaster Relief Update

Hand of Hope continues to work with DRADT in Florida, and Gleaning for the World (GFTW) in Florida, Colorado and along the East Coast, to provide desperately needed relief for those affected by recent disasters. These organizations are working closely with government officials in each region to provide assistance. They are also coordinating teams of volunteers who are eager to help in any way they can by distributing water and relief supplies where needed as well as helping home owners with the very difficult process of cleaning up from the devastation they’ve experienced.

We are so thankful for the countless volunteers who have come out to serve and selflessly help others in their time of need – offering hope and showing the love of Christ through practical acts of service.

Blessing Families in Vanuatu

Sometimes in life it is the very simplest of things that can make a really big difference. This was particularly true for the children of Vanuatu – an island nation located in the South Pacific, East of Australia. Hand of Hope CEO David Meyer visited Vanuatu and saw firsthand the very real need for clothing and school supplies. So many families in Vanuatu are simply too poor to provide adequate clothing for their children, not to mention getting any school supplies.

Hand of Hope knew exactly how to meet these needs. A faithful partner blessed the Joyce Meyer Ministries Australia office with a very large donation of brand new children’s clothing. The clothing donation was shipped off to a local ministry, Apostolic Life Ministries, in Vanuatu. Joyce Meyer Ministries also made an appeal to our partners and friends to donate school supplies and sports equipment. The clothing and school supplies were gratefully received not only by the children, but by their parents as well who cannot normally afford such luxuries as new clothing for their families. 

What a blessing to see the smiling children all dressed up in their new outfits, playing with new sports equipment, and utilizing their new school supplies. We are so thankful to our partners who gave so generously and to Apostolic Life Ministries who enabled the clothing distribution among the villages and outlying islands. There simply is no where that the love of God cannot reach.

Reaching the People of Melilla, Spain

Surrounded by Morocco on the coast of North Africa, Melilla, Spain is a small city where God is doing a great work. Hand of Hope was able to partner with a local church to help build a chapel and do a humanitarian outreach which touched 1,200 people in the community. Many people came to the outreach and heard the gospel, perhaps for the first time, and were provided with food, a great team of doctors, beauticians and clowns for the children. Joyce’s book Tell Them I Love Them in Arabic was included with every shopping bag of groceries given away. 

Our local ministry partner shared, “It was an honor to be able to serve the Lord Jesus in this great outreach. To see many tears, many lives changed and prayed for and to see many come to the Lord. Thank you very much for your support and for your kindness to these precious people who have been forsaken for so long!” Thank you as well to all of our partners who help us reach out to this remote Muslim area with the gospel of Christ!

Changing Lives

On Friday afternoons staff and volunteers from the St. Louis Dream Center take to nearby streets and neighborhoods to visit the children and their parents who live in the local apartment complexes. Each visit is an opportunity to build relationships within the community, meet physical and spiritual needs, and invite each child to attend the KidZjam ministry the next day. Visiting rain or shine, the team at the Dream Center has made over 3,300 contacts through their visits so far this year! 

Five years ago Jasmine met our staff during a visit and soon after began attending KidZjam with her brother Devion and sister Shamika. Jasmine was shy at first, but over the years has opened up her life to the staff and volunteers who faithfully make KidZjam happen every week. Jasmine no longer lives in the apartments where she first met our staff. However, she is sure to come back to the area and stay with her mom every Friday night so she can walk her brother and sister to KidZjam on Saturday morning. She now not only knows how important it is for her to keep going to the Dream Center and its events, but also for her siblings and cousins too! 

The St. Louis Dream Center is reaching Jasmine, and hundreds of children like her, for Christ each week through the KidZjam Ministry!

Saving lives in Niger

The African nation of Niger is one of the worst places in the world to be a mother and raise children due to on-going health and hunger issues in the region. Recognized by the United Nations as one of the least developed countries in the world, Niger faces issues related to a lack of quality healthcare which poses a significant challenge to the population and contributes to high infant mortality, short life expectancies and a wide variety of avoidable health issues. 

Joyce Meyer Ministries/Hand of Hope is doing what we can to help. We are supporting a feeding program in the Tillabéri region of Niger through Effective Ministries – they are working with the government of Niger to help families affected by famine through the distribution of grain, and also through ERDO (Emergency Relief and Overseas Development) who is distributing food in Niger’s Sahel region. 

To help address the need for quality health care, we’re also providing support to CURE International, who opened a much needed hospital in Niger in 2010. The hospital meets physical needs of handicapped children with an emphasis on treating orthopedic conditions. Plastic and reconstructive surgeries (post burn contractures, cleft lip and palate, etc.) and general surgeries are performed as well and children are prayed for daily. 

 The hospital is making a major impact on the surrounding community. A young boy was brought to the CURE Hospital at the age of 2, he had fallen into a cooking fire and suffered severe burns on the side of his face, neck, shoulder, chest and upper arm. After several surgeries, he can now hold his head upright and while his face and body still bear the scars of his accident, his shame is gone. He gave his life to Christ and he has decided to enroll in a training school to become an evangelist.

Adventure Along the Amazon River

Living in a hammock on a boat on the Amazon for a week is not easy. Of course, hammock or no hammock, living in the Amazon is never easy, which is exactly why Hand of Hope wanted to reach the people living in this desperate area. We traveled for 7 hours in a boat down the Amazon and arrived in Curua Brazil, a remote village with very little medical or dental help. We were faced with life and death situations requiring immediate attention. 

From day one, our clinic functioned more like an emergency room than a normal day-to-day medical/dental clinic. One little boy’s story paints the picture perfectly, 8 year old Claudio. He arrived with a previously undiagnosed heart murmur, as well as a high fever. If the heart murmur was not worrisome enough, while we were caring for this little boy his temperature spiked to 104° F and he was becoming increasingly lethargic. The cardiologist on our team diagnosed him with an infection around his heart. Claudio didn’t have long to live. So, we started an IV on him, gave him antibiotics, and prayed. Children Claudio’s age that don't respond quickly to treatment can easily die very quickly. So, we monitored him all day, giving him the appropriate medications and fluids. 

He had not improved by the time we were closing the clinic for the day. All we could do at this point was make arrangements to have him sent by the fastest method there, by boat, to the next biggest city where there was a hospital that could treat him. The boat was leaving at 9pm, but miraculously at 8pm his fever broke and he was almost totally recovered! Jesus very likely saved his life, the lives of 5-6 other patients on this day and the souls of many more! 

Our time on the Amazon was an incredible experience, one we will never forget. In one short week we treated 3,388 patients and prayed with nearly 400 to receive Christ. Although our team was there for a short term mission, I am so thankful for the on-going work being done by our ministry partner, Project Amazon, who serves remote Amazon villages all throughout the year on the medical/dental boat purchased by Hand of Hope. Lives being changed, people being helped, Christ's name brought to the most remote parts of the earth. All because of you, thank you for serving with us!

Benin, Africa: human trafficking, hunger, poverty–overcome by Jesus!

In Benin, a small country in West Africa, many children in rural villages are suffering from exploitation and poverty – being sold and stolen for child labor, sex and organ trafficking.

We began partnering with Action and Impact Plus, a local organization that founded a Christian school in a particularly vulnerable village. They care for the most at-risk children, mostly orphans, by educating, housing and loving them. On a recent visit, our team noticed a need for a consistent supply of food. As a result, Hand of Hope is now supplying enough food for 3 meals daily, 7 days a week for all 77 children living at the school. The children are safe, healthy, well fed and know the love and protection of Jesus – while being educated!

In addition, we are now airing Joyce’s teachings on local radio in French, reaching into villages across Benin.  We are amazed at all that God is doing around the world, and how he leads us to help others.
