Paying Tribute to War Veterans

Sandra McCollom

Patriotism was very much alive in St. Louis, Missouri this past Saturday as nearly 100,000 people gathered downtown for the first parade to welcome home our servicemen and women from the Iraqi War. Joyce Meyer Ministries took this occasion to also show appreciation for all of our veterans immediately following the parade in the Resource Village. A free copy of Joyce’s book, Battlefield of The Mind was given to every veteran who wanted one as well as a retail gift card as our way of saying thank you. As they walked by I saw a number of faces light up and make a b-line to the ministry’s table, saying “I gotta have that book, I watch Joyce on TV!” One service woman stood crying as she read the back cover of Battlefield of the Mind.

Matt Wood, who served a year in Iraq with the Illinois National Guard, said, “It’s extremely humbling, it’s amazing to be part of something like this with all of these people who served their country with such honor.” The tears that rolled on both veterans faces and those of the cheering crowd was a clear sign that this was a needful thing to do - to show respect to these brave men and women.

Saving a Life in Sri Lanka

Ashley Wilkins - Hand of Hope Medical Missions Director

Gasping for breath, 68 year old Perianyen made her way to our medical outreach in Sri Lanka. When she arrived she was so weak from the lack of oxygen she collapsed on the ground struggling to breathe. Our team rushed to her side and we were able to administer life saving medication which saved Perianyen's life. After she was able to breathe again, the smile on her face was beautiful.

We just began our first medical/dental outreach of the year in Colombo, Sri Lanka which also kicks off a week of great ministry with Joyce and the team. What a great start we have had to our week of clinics! The community is happy we are here and everyone is talking about the Festival of Life with Joyce later this week.

We are seeing more diabetes and high blood pressure than I have ever seen in past clinics. Nearly every patient has issues with these two illnesses and almost none have had either checked in years. A lot of them take medicine but have no idea how much they should be taking because a doctor has not treated them in years. Our team is able to test and treat for both hypertension and diabetes which will be life saving for many.

We are so thankful to our wonderful partners who help make medical clinics like this one happen. Lives are being saved and hearts given to Jesus!

Protecting Women and Children in Israel

Shelly Meyer–Hand of Hope International Relations Officer

Hezi was insistent that his wife Zohar have an abortion. The couple had just married and a baby was definitely not part of the plan. Zohar could not bear the thought of aborting their first child. Hand of Hope proudly partners with Be’ad Chaim in Israel, who offers support to women in Zohar’s situation. The Jerusalem office counselor met with the couple. Deuteronomy 30:19 was shared with Hezi and Zohar, “I call heaven and earth to witness … that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse, therefore choose life, that you may live and your seed.“ Zohar cried out, “Yes, I also want a blessing for our family...please let’s choose life so that we’ll be blessed.”

Zohar later became ill and feared a miscarriage. Amazingly, this crisis caused Hezi to have mercy on his wife and their unborn baby and he agreed to continue with the pregnancy! Zohar is just one of the many mothers and children Hand of Hope supports through Be’ad Chaim, an organization that is dedicated to the protection of mothers and unborn children in Israel.

Battlefield of the Mind in Georgian

David L. Meyer – CEO Hand of Hope

Today we had the pleasure of starting distribution of Joyce's most popular book, Battlefield of The Mind. For the first time ever the people in the country of Georgia can read Battlefield of the Mind translated in their native language of Georgian. This tiny country, which was once part of the former Soviet Union, was forced to speak Russian during those years causing their native language to be suppressed. Now that Georgians have their independence they are seeing a resurgence of their native language. We were told there are very few Christian books in Georgian and they were very thankful to receive Joyce's. With this new language we have now printed and given away Battlefield of the Mind books in 51 different languages. This tiny country of only 5.5 million people say thank you to the friends and partners of JMM.

Bringing Hope to Joselin - Nicaragua

Ashley Wilkins - Hand of Hope Medical Missions Director

We recently had the opportunity to host free medical and dental clinics in Nicaragua. During these clinics we met Joselin, the 6 year old daughter of a local pastor. We learned that Joselin battles a variety of health issues and was in need of some basic necessities, including a wheelchair. One of the medical volunteers on this outreach was so moved by Joselin’s needs that when she returned home from the outreach she purchased a wheelchair for Joselin with her own money. She flew back to Nicaragua on her own to personally deliver the wheelchair directly to Joselin and her family. The reunion was extremely touching and Joselin now has a brand new wheelchair.

We are honored to work with volunteers who are touched with compassion for others and continue to make a difference in the lives of people around the world. If you or someone you know is a medical or dental professional and would like to help make a difference in someone’s life, visit our website at joycemeyer.org/medicalmissions.
